Ground Coffee - Gourmet Guide

June 12, 2019 | By Dave Mattingly

Ground Coffee refers to coffee whose beans have been crushed or ground by the roaster, then packed in such a way to preserve freshness. It is not possible to enjoy the true flavor of coffee if its beans are not ground, so even whole bean coffee must ultimately be ground before brewing. A cup of coffee is brewed from Ground Coffee by passing hot water through the grounds and extracting the oils and other compounds that give coffee its flavor, color and aroma. Ground Coffee is produced in different ways, by using blade or "burr" grinders, which cut the coffee beans into small uniform pieces, or by pounding or rolling the coffee beans. At home, in order to retain the best flavor, it is important to brew the coffee soon after grinding it.

Since Ground Coffee has a shorter shelf life than whole bean coffee, it is recommended that Ground Coffee be stored in a cool, dark place, as moisture, heat and light alter the flavor of the grounds. Ground Coffee oxidizes quickly once it comes in contact with air, so it is important to store your Ground Coffee in an air tight container.
