igourmet.com is saluting blue cheese by offering this International Blue Cheese Assortment, containing four of the world's greatest blue cheeses. For creating blue cheese in the first place, we owe thanks to a micro-organism named penicillium roqueforti. This microscopic spore attaches itself to a young cheese and, assuming the cheese is laced with small cracks, multiplies and spreads blue mold throughout as the cheese matures. By the way, this little microbe is also the principal agent used in creating penicillin, the world's first antibiotic. And now, back to the cheese...
  • Roquefort: The world's oldest known blue cheese. It is made from sheep's milk and can only be produced and aged in a specific region in France, also named Roquefort. Exceptionally tangy!
  • Mountain Gorgonzola: Another ancient blue, this one hails from northern Italy. It has a firm, yet springy texture and a mellow bite that melts in your mouth.
  • Roaring Forties: A modern blue from King Island, Australia. We are astounded by its creamy, delicious flavor everytime we sample it.
  • Royal Blue Stilton: This special Stilton, still produced in Leicestershire, is full, rich and creamy. Its shocking blue veins radiate outward from a natural, crinkly brown crust, revealing layers and folds of honeyed, cheddary flavor.
This assortment includes one half-pound of each cheese selection.
  • Please note that any item temporarily out of stock will be substituted with a similar item of equal value.

This was a wonderful selection of blue cheeses. [...]I commented on the individual cheeses as follows:Roquefort: Everything you would expect out of a Rouefort. This was similar in quality to others I've had in the US, and had it's wonderful, pungent bite and earthy flavor. If you've not had this before, don't be put off by what can be a messy rind with foil sticking all over it. If the rind bothers you, trim off 1/8 of an inch or so. Mountain Gorgonzola: This cheese was wonderful using it in cooking. As an after dinner or snack by it's own though it's not quite as biting, pungent or earthy as the other blues here, so it can be hard to distinguish if served with them. It's a great cheese on a classic Italian four cheese pizza though, or mixed into something you are cooking that can handle a pretty strong burst of flavor in it. Roaring Forties: I had never had this blue and was pleasantly surprised. Very creamy but firmer than I expected, probably due to the hard rind. It has it's own distinct afterbite that put me off at first but I ended up wanting to try more and more. A very nice selection. It was also wonderful on some water crackers.Royal Blue Stilton: This is usually a wonderful cheese. However the particular Stilton they selected didn't have it's distinctive flavor for me and ended up tasting rather bland. More along the lines of a crumbly Danish blue than an English Stilton. This could have been due to it's age, or shipping. It was still very edible, just not as tasty as other Stilton's I have had.

This was my first order and will not be my last. I tried each of the selection in different arrangements. I had a wine and cheese tasting party, stuffed filet's for grilling and topped fresh spring mixed salad greens.

All my guest's will probably become igourmet's new customers!!

The Roaring Forties was easily my favorite. The strongest of the cheeses, however, was the Mountain Gorgonzola. The Royal Blue Stilton was a surprising disappointment without the usual strength of flavor of Stilton. The Roquefort was very nice and made me wonder what happened to Roquefort dressing.

Loved the product and think all the cheeses are wonderful, even though we have not finished the entire gift set yet. The only issue was the shipping, since I asked for the arrival time to be on a certain date/closeness to Christmas, and a neighbor was going to watch our front door to pick up the package and store it for secrecy. Luckily, I noted that the box arrived far too early, mailed from igourmet even before the projected arrival choices I had made online for Christmas. That would be our only real complaint.
