igourmet presents the winner of the 2005 Best Mature Traditional Cheddar in the World. The Keen Family has been making delicious cheddars since 1899 at Moorhays Farm near the Blackmore Vale in Southwestern England. This West Country Farmhouse Cheddar cheese matures for more than 12 months to perfection, occasionally growing blue veins at the edges. The cheddars are regularly turned and sampled to ensure that each achieves a unique, subtle, nutty flavor.

Keen's Traditional Cheddar is a West Country Farmhouse Cheddar, part of an exclusive list of British foods protected by a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). West Country Farmhouse Cheddar can only be made in Dorset, Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall Counties. Keen's Cheddar is one of these selected few.

  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

Comments about Keen's Traditional Unpasteurized Cheddar:

This is the perfect cheddar I have searched for years. Now, at last.
When you bite it, it bites back. Firm, complicated, sharp, crumbly and chewy - completely satisfying. The tang of this cultured milk brings to sensual memory all the best complements: juicy winesap apples, smoked fish and greek olives, whole grain crackers or baguette and red wine.
Disheartening to read contrary reviewers who whine about strong real flavor and demanding serious specialty food that requires one to pay attention. They ought to be disqualified from any reviewing or even from access to fine cheeses.

This just was too far over the cheddar edge for us. We eat cheeses on a regular if not daily basis and could not get past the first taste of this.

Super strong, and maybe a little overripe, but that could have just been my wedge. It was still very good, just a little too moldy. Had it with apple to offset the pungence.

A "Proper" Cheddar, Indeed!
By Lord MontigueVerified Reviewer from Northern Minnesota on 12/15/2007

Comments about Keen's Traditional Unpasteurized Cheddar:

I use this cheese with crackers and crusty bread. Flavor blends well with Artisan salami, and is good with a fine Bordeaux or Burgandy. I also use this in many cooking projects. A little grassier tasting than Montgomery's. A Brit would consider this a "proper" cheddar, indeed! CHEERS!!!

Comments about Keen's Traditional Unpasteurized Cheddar:

This cheddar is great as a stand-alone. It doesn't need to to be added to anything. Tired of the bland, strerilized cheddars made of homogenized, pasturized milk? This Cheddar will wake up your taste buds.

It simply does not get any better than this quintessential cheddar cheese. The texture was slightly crumbly, and the flavor was completely artisanal; nothing like supermarket cheddars. Highly recommended.

Comments about Keen's Traditional Unpasteurized Cheddar:

I thought it had gone bad but then you guys sent it to me again and it was the same.

igourmet Response: This is a very earthy authentic farmhouse cheddar which surprises many in that it in no way compares to more commercial varieties.
