Winner of the 2001 Best Exported British Cheese Award, Stinking Bishop is a washed rind cheese dating back to the Cistercian monks who once settled in Dymock where this cheese is made. Our variety is now made by Charles Martell, who works endlessly to carry on the traditional products of Gloucestershire. Washed in fermented pear juice (also called "Perry"), the cheese develops a stinky, pungent, orange-colored, sticky rind as Brevibacterium linens ripen the cheese from the inside out. At room temperature, this cheese will run across a plate. Named after the Stinking Bishop pear varietal from Gloucestershire, this cheese is a spectacular dairy experience.
  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.
  • Suitable for vegetarians.
  • Photo depicts whole 4.5 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

This cheese smells like a dirty sock, but it tastes deliciously smooth, creamy, and friendly. It is also a relatively rare cheese. It is certainly worth ordering and enjoying! It really is very good!

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

Ok I don't like to leave a bad review but I would have liked a heads-up on this one. I love stinky cheese but this cheese to stinky to a whole new level! I absolutely hate to admit this but I couldn't even eat it! The smell was so pungent and overpowering that I was the only one brave enough to try it. Now others may love this cheese. I just can't say that I did.

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

My favorite cheese is Epoisses, which should tell you something about me. It's like a drug. Stinking Bishop is milder in flavor and has a less heady aroma. I think it is even less pungent than Pont l'Eveque. It is a delicious cheese, but is distinctly British and lacks that certain pungency that similar French cheese have.

All That Glitters Is Mold
By WWtasterVerified Reviewer from Binghamton, New York on 10/24/2007
Pros:

Best Uses:
After Dinner, Hors d'oeuvre
Describe Yourself:
Foodie, Health Conscious, Simple Tastes
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

Pungent barely describes this cheese but as with Durian fruit, 1000-year old egg, Limburger, etc. it masks the culinary delight that it is. Excellent on simple water crackers, it soars when also combined with fresh pear and a drizzle of honey. Deserving of its awards, the pasture and flavor of the region reveals itself in its background taste. Worth the risk for the timid.

Love this cheese. I bought it in London while staying in a hotel. Of course could not let it sit in the room so hung it out the window, it was december. Ate most of it and forgot to remove it when I left ;-{) Nice surprise for the next guest. Happy we can get it here now. Yum

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

I first tasted this remarkable cheese several years ago at a club in London and fell in love with it. I return to London at least once per year and immediately dash off to a small cheese shop in Shorts Gardens (near Covent Garden) to purchase another wheel. Now that it’s available here I’m able to share it with my friends on this side of the Atlantic. Thank you [...]!

Comments about Stinking Bishop:

I tried this because it was mentioned in the Wallace & Grommit movie, and I have bought it twice since then. It is a remarkable cheese. Everyone in the room has to at least try it, just because the person who doesn't try it will be overwhelmed. But then everyone in the room will love it, even those who don't ordinarily like strong cheeses. Try it with trusted and trusting friends, not at a large party. You'll be glad you did -- and you'll know why it should be banned in public places.
