Located in: Cheese, France
Made in a tiny town in the Burgundy region of France, Epoisses is one of the great cheeses of the world. It is a name-controlled cheese that has a very pungent aroma and rich, creamy interior. Each cheese is covered in an edible reddish-brown coating, and underneath that, a creamy, white interior with a delightfully daunting aroma that comes straight from the farm. This handcrafted cheese is first washed in brine, then cured in humid cellars for four weeks. After this brief aging period, the rind is rinsed with Marc de Bourgogne, a liqueur that is a by-product of the local wine industry. Please beware: Epoisses is so stinky that it is banned on public transportation in France, a country usually tolerant of such aromas. This aroma will prevail in the box on arrival, so don't be alarmed.
  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 8.8 ounce form of cheese.
  • Best enjoyed within seven days of delivery.

Comments about Epoisses:

As the description warns, this cheese has a strong aroma. It also has a strong flavor that we love but that may be too much if you are more of a Brie and Cheddar fan. We have enjoyed this cheese on many cheese trolleys in Europe and this is a great example. If your tastes run to strong cheeses, this is a must for you. If not, another selection may be better.

Notwithstanding the highly favorable reviews about the Epoisses, we were disappointed with the portion received. It was neither "stinky" nor pugnant in favor for our taste. Perhaps, the portion we received was not up to standard.

Comments about Epoisses:

This is a superb cheese with a melt-in-your-mouth texture, a haughty aroma, and a rich, buttery flavor. The rind is delightful as well. Our puppy prefers to eat this variety, rather than roll in it (like Livarot and Limberger). Holds well when chilled after opening.

PLEASE serve this cheese after it awakes (about an hour at room temperature) and just begins to flow.

Comments about Epoisses:

I first tasted this awesome cheese while visiting France and I fell in love. When I got home I visited Igourmet.com and was thrilled to see that they carried it. I ordered some and it is every bit as wonderful a treat as it was in that fancy French restaurant!

Rich, creamy, indulgent! Serve at room temperature for the best flavor and consistency. The aroma is a bit pungent, but the flavor is both delicate and decadent. This cheese will just melt in your mouth.

This cheese is very runny and is delicious on crostini or crackers.

I first encountered this amazing cheese at the Inn at Little Washington. They served it as part of a desert cheese course. We were all blown away by its powerful but sublime flavor. I hoped it would be as good when I ordered some from igourmet and I was not disappointed. Try it with any red wine, champagne or Chambourd. The ultimate for funky fromage fans!

For those into the less innocuous foods, this cheese is at the top of the list. There are few foods as complex and tasty as this rather robust cheese. You can't beat its flavor but be prepared for its pungency.

For adults only lol.
The Epoisses I received was a little bit overriped and had a slight bitter taste, but I love this cheese, I ate it faster...
The taste is not as strong as the smell.
I introduced this cheese at a "Cheese sampling party" but I was the only one to appreciate it. The smell was too strong for my guests.

Comments about Epoisses:

I first had Epoisses on a river cruise in France in the summer of '06. I remember writing down the name of the cheese so I wouldn't forget it (and I remember buying some at the market in Lyon and pigging out with a fresh baguette). I googled when I returned and have been ordering it from [...]ever since. It's not for the faint-hearted- my garage still smells like stinky cheese- but it holds a place of honor on the stinky cheese tray at every party I have.

Comments about Epoisses:

We are great fans of epoisse - stink and all. However, this one was just a tad over-ripe and had already started to show its age. It lasted less than a week before it had to be tossed - but there was only a little little bit left anyway. It has a great epoisse flavor - perfect on a fresh baguette and a good Burgundy.

This is the best of all cheeses, reserved for the true connaisseurs ... beware the very strong taste, it is not for the faint of heart!

Best appreciated at the end of a meal, and after eating all other cheeses on your plate since the strong, rich and spicy aroma will stay on your palate for quite some time. Suggested wines would be Burgandy, or other strong and earthy wines.
