The word tomme implies that a cheese is made from the milk of more than one herd. Tomme de Savoie is made by an expert cheesemaker and is always of exceptional quality. It has a beautifully rustic, gray-brown, fuzzy, inedible thick crust. The cheese inside is robust with slight overtones of salt and an unmistakably raw flavor. This French, unpasteurized cow's milk cheese has a charming simplicity. It is absolutely wonderful paired with sausages, fruit, bread, and wine. All the good things in life!

  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk; aged for 60 days.
  • Photo depicts whole 4 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

Like the abondance which we enjoyed during vacations in Combloux (near Megeve), the tomme was very much like the ones we consumed on our ski trips. Perhaps, a bit strong for some but it goes very well with a good hearty red wine.

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

great tasting hard cheese. it has tons of flavor. If you have ever tasted fresh raw whole milk, it has that "cow" taste, you know where it comes from! It is similar to parmesan in texture, very hard cheese that tends to crumble when you cut it. I like it just on its own, with french bread and a glass of red wine. Fantastic.

Finding flavorful cheeses that don't do battle with wine can be a challenge. This is one which complements both reds and whites and they return the favor.

Creamy, Pungent
Cons:
swetty
Best Uses:
all occasions

Bottom Line:

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

Tomme de Savoie is a great cheese for all occasions, if you like a strong cheese. Because the cheese, after a cut, tends to dry quickly and lose its creamy taste, I particularly called igourmet to order a half form. I was really disappointed when I received it in 4 separate cuts. Each of the cut is less than 1 pound. [...]

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

This is an intensely flavored mature cheese somewhat similar to Comte and gruyere, but even more deep and sultry. It has no sharpness, no tangy-ness, no pungency. It's just rich and smooth with a lingering finish.

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

My friend, who owns a five star French restaurant, surprised everyone with this cheese at a party at his house one night. Among the bottles of Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau Lafite Rothchild, this cheese was a real star in it's own right.Excellent cheese. Top of the line. Highly recommend this to anyone.

Huge, lingering flavor
By harborshiremanVerified Reviewer from York Harbor, ME on 2/24/2007
Pros:
High Quality, Versatile
Best Uses:
Snacking melting
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Tomme de Savoie:

Has a powerful resonance -- complex flavors (meaty, herbal, farmyard, more) seize your mouth and won't let go. Much more assertive than aroma suggests. Addictive.
