Allgäu Emmental (or Allgäuer Emmentaler) is also referred to as Bavarian Swiss Cheese. One of the most famous German cheeses, it is not originally from Allgäu, but from the region of Emmental located in the Swiss canton of Bern. This cheese has been crafted there since the 18th century. In 1821, the "Swiss method" was brought to the Allgäu for the first time by Josef Aurel Stadler.

Made from pure Bavarian milk, it is high in protein with a refined flavor. Our Bavarian Swiss has a rich, yellow color and large eyes. We recommend it sliced for sandwiches; cut in strips for Chef salads; or chunked for party platters.

  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 7 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the pound.
  • Please contact us if you would like to purchase the whole form.

If you are tired of the terrible cheddar they sell around you, this is a cheese to dream of. Try it in squares with a good Scotch whisky or an old-fashioned semi-sweet wine like the French Jurancon (it was the French wine served before the meal in the 1930, before Ike put whisky on the French maps). You might try it with a side of paprika or cumin, but the cheese does not really need anything but the company of good friends.

I'VE never been partial to swiss cheeses. I find they are always too mild and dry. This cheese was tasty with a strong flavor, smooth and creamy with a firm consistency.

A really nice, full flavor. I would describe the taste as a cross between a good Swiss and Jarlsberg cheese. Great on a cracker with a glass of wine.

I'm not a big fan of swiss cheese and I am not a cheese expert by any means, but I thought the cheese was alright. I actually bought it for my mom along with 2 other similar cheeses for mother's day and she liked all three alot... However I've got to say, the woman has never met a cheese she didn't like :P

A dense rye bread, slightly toasted, a good mustard, and Emmental is a wonderful lunch. Add a green salad or endive and golden delicious apple lightly sauted and you will want to yodel!

I didn't know Emmental could be so creamy and mild yet flavorful. I think I've never had a good Emmental before. I generally don't care for
"Swiss" cheese, but I love this on whole rye crackers!

I never had the Allgaeuer Emmenthaler, but I liked it. It is a bit milder than the Swiss and somewhat softer. We use it for sandwiches and on crackers. Will buy it again.

This is a fantastic cheese that should please everyone, even if they are hesitant to try new types. There is simply no comparison in the texture and flavor of real Emmenthaler and the cheap sliced stuff in the supermarket.

A surprising delight!
By Truely Pleased from Georgia, USA on 2/22/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was looking for some truely German products to fill a gift basket for some German friends this Christmas and after reading the description of this cheese I bought an extra pound for myself. Absolutely the best swiss cheese I had ever tasted. Such a creamy buttery flavor that banished any thoughts I will EVER have of eating the American plastic version of Swiss cheese again. This is what real swiss cheese is all about...try the real thing and you will be very happy you did!

More flavor than Swiss
By Pastor George from Clymer, New York on 2/22/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

One of the "pros" in rating is durability. The problem is that because it is so tasty (like a "beefed up" Swiss) it has no chance to be durable!
