Schoenegger Kaese-Alm has created a classic Bavarian cheese. They use fresh, unpasteurized milk from cows raised on mountain farms in protected regions of Europe where they are fed on fresh grass and hay. They were granted a special license from Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (great grandson of the last King of Bavaria, Ludwig II), to make Konig Ludwig Bierkase. König Ludwig Dunkel is a bottom-fermentation dark specialty beer, produced in accordance with traditional Bavarian brewing methods. This special beer is made in one of the last castle breweries in the heart of Bavaria, south of Munich in Kaltenberg Castle.

König Ludwig Bierkäse is a delicate yellow, semi-hard cheese with small holes ripened in fine King Ludwig dark beer to give it its hearty taste. This Dark Beer Cheese melts well for cooking, but is just terrific on its own or served with hearty German bread and a good beer.

  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 9 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

This is a full flavored cheese, with that rich appealing "stinky" aura. While full flavored, this is not an overpowering cheese, and will give all cheese lovers the satisfaction only a mature cheese can deliver. Room temperature is essential for full enjoyment. I love this stuff! Hate to tell you how much I ate after we opened the package!

This cheese disappeared very quickly and we will definitely reorder it. It is much less pungent than a Munster, but more so than German Tilsit, giving it a very pleasant and definite taste.

I love this cheese and am ordering more. With a smooth and creamy texture to it, it also has such a different flavor that goes well with anything and tastes wonderful on its' own. I've yet to try it as an after dinner cheese because I can't wait that long and dive into it with my wine.

I enjoy the cheese in small quantities together with my favored German beer but American cheese lovers as I knw them may not appreciate the special pungent kick in it.

This is a wonderful European cheese that adds character to a cheese course, and is great as a snack melted on crusty bread. Would also stand up to other uses such as fondue.

One of the more pungent firm cheeses.

I was very surprised by how good this cheese was. I don't know why my expectations were low for a Bavarian cheese (something I hadn't knowingly had before), but they were. Boy, was I surprised! The cheese has a very full-bodied flavor withour being particularly sharp or pungent. Both my wife and I really enjoyed this cheese quite a bit. I will have to start trying out more German cheese if this is any indication of their quality.

It's hard to find a good ripe cheese with a strong earthy flavor - so glad to have a flavorful cheese sent in this months selection. Reminds me of a good danish Tilset.

When I first opened this cheese, I was a bit put off by the "stinky cheese" aroma. But the taste is totally not what I expected. It's creamy and smooth with just a slight bite. A very nice cheese with crackers and red wine.

Pros:
High Quality
Bottom Line:

I deliver Meals-On-Wheels and one "customer", a 97 year-old German gentleman with a love of cheese spoke of the best cheese he'd ever eaten, a "Bier Cheese" from Germany. He couldn't find any that wasn't made in Wisconsin. He'd searched the local markets (a habit I broke him of when I offered to do this marketing for him . .) and even the "German" deli did not have the authentic German cheese. I was ecstatic to have found your company and Carl was thrilled. . .
