Odenwälder cheese is made by Adrienne and Klaus Wolf who have a passion for cheese and a great interest in creating new types with fruits, vegetables and herbs. Klaus Wolf is known in Germany as a cheese sommelier. His cheeses have gained a reputation that reaches far beyond the German border. Since 2006 the Wolfs have joined the exclusive Confrérie de Saint Uguzon, the French cheese organization which strives to protect cheeses as “cultural possessions,” all the while working against increasing mass production.

The Wolf's have become well known for their unpasteurized, pungent flavored cheeses. These cheeses all have fruit on top and are pierced so that the juices will go into the cheese. They are what is called Schnittkaese in German; fancy table cheese for slicing, not necessarily for cooking. Firm-textured and made of raw cow's milk, these cheeses come from southeast of Frankfurt in southern Germany. We offer three varieties:

  • Fig with Mustard: Seasoned with fig liqueur, filled with fig mustard and garnished with ripened figs, this aromatic cheese takes on a fruity note and an incomparable character. Judging from the name - Feigenkäse (fig cheese) - one might expect a sweet dessert cheese, but the mustard mixed into the fig paste gives it a tart flavor reminiscent of an Italian fruit mostarda.
  • Mediterranean with Cherry Peppers and Tomatoes: The southern sun, captured in semi-soft cow's milk cheese, lends this Bavarian specialty a Mediterranean character. The cheese is pierced and filled with a paste made of African cherry peppers and sun dried tomatoes. The sweetness from the tomatoes melds with the natural, edible rind, leading the senses onto an exotic, hot-blooded adventure. In the original German, this cheese is called Wolfsblut, or “wolf's blood.” It is so named for the bright red fruits and the cheesemakers' last name, Wolf.
  • Smoked with Plum: This cheese resembles a smoked brick, but with juicy dark plums on top. This variety particularly stands out for its different look. The taste is smoky, fruity, with a complex finish.

What wretched stuff is this? Spoiled with a sharp ammonia smell. Effective in eliciting the gag reflex when placed upon the tongue. Stop selling this, igourmet -- at best, it taints your reputation.

Comments about Odenwälder Flavored Cheeses:

The smoked plum cheese had a unique taste - a combination of the creamy cheese, slight sweetness from the plum and a smokey overlay. We had this cheese as hors d'oeuvres in a cheese plate where it gave an interesting contrast to the more standard cheeses. It would also be good in salads because it has a nice blend of sweet and savory. Not nearly as sweet as I thought it would be, which is good. Similar to a creamy goat cheese with fruit without the tang that comes from goat. Nice change of pace.

Comments about Odenwälder Flavored Cheeses:

I love both figs and mustard can could find no evidence of either by taste or sight. There was a slight greenish liquid present. This was sharp and very hard; nearly impossible to use with crackers. I'll try it melted into pasta or rice, I guess.

Comments about Odenwälder Flavored Cheeses:

One of my favorite dishes is grilled pork loin with plum sauce, so I was excited to try this cheese. It was sweet and smokey plums over a full-bodied cheese, which really gave it a punchy flavor. I had it on sandwiches or mixed into a beet salad. Very good. Would try the fig-mustard flavor next.

Comments about Odenwälder Flavored Cheeses:

I love cheese and I did not like this one at all. It had a very odd flavour and smell and it unfortunately ended up in the bin. Save your money and buy something else.
