An exciting new cheese from Bavaria has made its way to our shores. Called Konigskase (King's Cheese), it is made from milk taken from cows that are exclusively raised on mountain farms in protected regions. In this pristine environment, the cows only feed on fresh grass or hay. The cheesemakers use unpasteurized milk and produce different varieties of hard and semi-hard cheeses using completely natural methods, free from preservatives. Their specialties include King's Cheese, which is moderately aromatic and royally delicious, and King Ludwig's Bierkäse (beer cheese), which is brushed with dark beer during maturation. King's Cheese has a golden yellow appearance and a semi-hard texture. It is perfect for slicing and melting, making it an ideal candidate for sandwiches and fondue.
  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 9 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

I ordered several cheeses this time around. I was happpy with all the others I chose but was not prepared for the pungent aroma of this one. I could not get the smell off my hands. I actually thought it might be spoiled but being that I like some stinky cheeses I ate through the smell. I did not like the taste of this cheese either. I found it bitter, and offensive. I was interested to read that some people actually enjoy this cheese. It must be an aquired taste...

Excellent example of German artisan cheese. Not as pungent as some, but still delivers a wealth of flavor. While this cheese is great when enjoyed on its own, a personal favorite for me is adding it to twice baked potatoes with red onion.

I did not like this cheese. It smelled like fresh dog [*]. The taste wasn't too bad but it was along the bitter side, but the smell really ruined it for me.

Bottom Line:

Although I would not recommend this to a friend, I might recommend it to a friend who knows cheeses. The initial smell was a real turnoff. If it was not for the description, I would have thrown this cheese in the trash. The cheese has a nice mild flavor and melts in your mouth. May go well with eggs.
