Located in: Cheese, Holland
Named after its town of origin, Leyden is one of the three most important cheeses of Holland. This flavorful cheese long ago inspired the saying, "Once a Dutchman eats a piece of Leyden, he is spoiled for any other cheese." Leyden's firm composition and texture and the addition of cumin seeds (which are responsible for its tangy flavor and spicy aroma) distinguish it from all other Dutch cheeses.

Comments about Leyden - Pound Cut:

If you haven't tried Leyden, you are missing out. Of course you have to like cumin, the spice that makes Mexican food taste, well, Mexican.

My spouse loves this cheese. She is a big cumin fan but the cheese itself is complex and tasty without being overly rich.

Comments about Leyden - Pound Cut:

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, . . . and Leyden. These would make the perfect day! I hadn't high hopes for the Leyden, just thought it might be interesting, but I was absolutely delighted at the compelling flavor! The cumin seeds (which I had to check out the description again to find out they weren't caraway or something else -- because they tasted so good) were an excellent contrast with the buttery hard Leyden cheese. I will explore ways in which to use this, but am perfectly happy to eat a chunk by itself or with some crackers and olives.

Comments about Leyden - Pound Cut:

This works on wheat thins or by itself with a full bodied beer. It works well with salted meats like salami or corned beef, too. Expect a large cumin start and finish.

This is my favorite type of Dutch cheese. Eat it all the time when I visit the Netherlands. This cut has a wonderful flavor. Eat it everyday on toasted muffin. Ready to order more.

Comments about Leyden - Pound Cut:

Leyden Cheese has a very unique flavor. It is a hard cheese and goes great with your favorite distilled beverage. More of a beer cheese than wine.
