Located in: Cheese, Holland
Named after its town of origin, Leyden is one of the three most important cheeses of Holland. This flavorful cheese long ago inspired the saying, "Once a Dutchman eats a piece of Leyden, he is spoiled for any other cheese." Leyden's firm composition and texture and the addition of cumin seeds (which are responsible for its tangy flavor and spicy aroma) distinguish it from all other Dutch cheeses.

If you LOVE Cumin...you'll LOVE this cheese! I cannot buy this anywhere else. I had it as part of a cheese platter at a restaurant in the mountains of NC. We bought this cheese for a cheese/wine pairing party. Very, very nice!

Comments about Leyden:

The thing which is unique with this cheese is the addition of whole toasted cumin seeds. The seeds add so much flavor to this that it is a treat with fruit, as a snack, or even in a sandwich with luncheon meats or just plain.
Another cheese of this variety is Nagelkaas which has whole cloves in it, which resemble nails. Also very tasty and a treat to anyone not familiar with the Dutch cheeses.

Comments about Leyden:

This is a cheese that you grew up on, if you are Dutch. Here in Wisconsin, the land of cheese, Leyden is impossible to find. I was delighted when I was able to order it through [...] Try it the way the Dutch eat it - dark, heavy rye bread with a little butter and the cheese right on top. Delicious. I would highly recommend this cheese to anyone, but especially the Dutch that are having difficulty finding Leyden in the states.

This cheese delivers exactly what it promises. The flavor of cumin is unmistakable. I've used this successfully on Chili and in Quesadillas. Can be eaten on it's own in moderation; the cumin really dominates the taste.

By Lana M.Verified Reviewer from Bellingham, WA on 2/22/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Best Uses:
With Crackers
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Leyden:

I wasn't sure what to expect with this cheese, but I'm very happy with it. It has a tangy taste, with a bit of a "bite" to it, almost like a really sharp aged cheddar but a little creamier. The addition of the cumin seeds is wonderful -- it gives it a bit of a "crunch" with a burst of flavor. Use a mild-flavored cracker with this one -- you really want the flavor of the cheese to stand out.
