From the artisan cheesemakers who created Brillo di Treviso comes Tartufino Speziato. It is a soft-textured cheese whose surface is coated with a treatment of extra virgin olive oil, natural black truffle flavoring and many spices, especially cinnamon and nutmeg. The "coating" on this is better than the ash coating usually found on this type cheese.

A worthy alternative to Sottocenere
By Jon CVerified Purchaser from New York City on 1/2/2009

Pros:
Buttery, Complex, Flavorful, Rich
Describe Yourself:
Foodie
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

I purchased this from iGourmet as a substitute for Sottocenere (another rich black truffle infused cheese from the same dairy), which I am inordinately fond of. It is softer in texture and has somewhat different "dust" on the rind. Serve it very thin with a drop of fig molasses. Then sit back and watch your guests' pupils dilate in ecstasy.

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

While Truffle with any cheese is a winning combination, it has become a standard amongst small cheese houses and the cheese-lover in general, and perhaps is given the "Great Cheese!" assessment gratis. This is not the case with this cheese! Building on the already truffle-aroma essence infused into the body of the product, the artists coat the rind with aromatic spices. The dominant flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg empower the taste to new heights. An excellent cheese to introduce to the cheese novice and the cheese-phile alike. Try with mild fruit, light crackers.

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

I stumbled upon this cheese quite by accident in a cheese shop and it has become my favorite cheese. The combination of truffle and nutmeg is exquisite! While the cheese itself is not especially notable, the coating is amazing! I like to shave off thin slices and eat it alone.

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

We first had this wonderful cheese at Restaurant Gary Danko in San Francisco. It has a delightful flavor of truffles and warm winter spices. Perfect for a cheese course starter, but just as much at home on a dessert cheese plate.

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

When the package was opened, I noticed the warm, full aroma of the spices. This aroma is even as you eat the cheese, but it is not overwhelming, but adds to the enjoyment of the cheese. The effect is one of warmth, earthy, "golden".

Comments about Tartufino Speziato:

This was a new choice for me. I was not disappointed, but I don't know if this is something I would order again in the future. I enjoy cheeses that have flavors that jump out at you...this one was good, just not GREAT. Very good paired with fruit and a nice wine. I would recommend this cheese to those who like milder flavors.
