(based on 10 ratings)
Located in:Cheese, USA
Towering misty redwood trees and scenic rocky northern California coastline lured Mary Keehn to Humboldt County where she established Cypress Grove Chevre in 1984. From the very beginning, Cypress Grove has been recognized for its superior quality; winning more than 30 Gold Medals and Best of Show in national competitions.

Purple Haze is a recent addition to their line of cheeses. Lavender buds mixed with wild harvested fennel pollen give Purple Haze its addicting flavor. Its sweet flavor is wonderful as a dessert with honey and almonds or in a main dish with lamb.

  • Suitable for Vegetarians.
  • Made from goat's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 5 oz. form of cheese.

I am absolutely addicted to Purple Haze! Whenever I go cheese shopping I have to really try to try something new and not just buy this over and over. Smooth, unique, and flavorful - we have trouble not eating it all at once!

Bad Flavor, Bitter

We did not enjoy this at all. I happen to enjoy lavender in most items, but it didn't taste like lavender to me.

Lavender comes throgh loud and clear
By AllisonVerified Reviewer from Broomfield, CO on 3/5/2007
Pros:
Creamy, Flavorful
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a delicious, creamy goat cheese that is truly unique in its lavender flavor. Two cautions: it spoils quickly, even in the airtight package, and it is very hard to get out of the package in an attractive state for serving to guests.

Strong flavor, but tasty!
By Doc LibVerified Reviewer from Cincinnati, OH on 2/23/2007
Pros:
Flavorful, Good Value
Best Uses:
For a refreshing dessert, With chutney
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It was very good, but it does have a strong fennel flavor that overpowered the lavender a little bit. The chevre was creamy and a little tangy but again this subtlty was overshadowed by the fennel. Overall, people liked it and were suprised by its complexity! Would buy again for a different flavor on my cheese plate

This cheese is incredible. Creamy cheese with lavender and fennel flavor. Wow. All I could do was eat this out of the package. Would have made a fabulous dessert. I can't say enough. You have to try it!

mm mm good
By Happy HomemakerVerified Reviewer from SLC, UT on 2/22/2007
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
Gone too fast, Package is small
Best Uses:
Don't cook with it, Eat it straight, Plain crackers best, Pungent aroma
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I absolutely love this stuff!! It has a strong, pungent flavor mostly based around the fennel, but you can taste the lavender, as well!! Smooth, creamy, delectably rich goat cheese, you wouldn't want to pair this with anything but bread or bland crackers!! Too good by itself.
