Located in: Cheese, USA
Schlosskranz (German for Castle Wreath) is made by the Marin Cheese Company, located just north of San Francisco. Since 1865, Marin Cheese has been a leader in the domestic cheese industry. Traditionally made in a large wheel that is shaped like a wreath, this cheese is bold, aromatic and pungeant. Our Schlosskranz comes to us in a smaller, easier to enjoy six ounce sqaure. Schlosskranz, the successor to Liederkranz, is a smear-ripened, washed-rind cheese. Enjoy this true American original served with hearty breads and ales.
  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.

Very good with thinly sliced sausages and good rye bread for breakfast. Fruit goes well with it too.
Good any time of day just to snack on.
Like any cheese, best at room temp.

Not as pungent as Liederkranz, my old favorite, or as smooth and creamy. Very good though, and I will buy again and try others.

Comments about Schlosskranz by Rouge et Noir:

Schloss was a surprise our first time, thinking it would be soft, stinky cheese, like Livarot or Epoisses. Instead, the aroma, texture and flavor brought to mind a Sharp cheddar-Stilton hybrid without the bite. Although not what we expected, this crumbly cheese grew on us over the course of three days of tasting. It may be a washed-rind cheese, but it is wholly unlike its cousins.

Comments about Schlosskranz by Rouge et Noir:

It has been so long since I have had Liederkranz, but this is slightly different and more like a French washed rind cheese, such as Epoisses, Wonderful
