Once perceived as only producing imitations of European cheeses, the USA now boasts some of the world's finest specialty cheesemakers. With growing public interest supporting these artisan cheesemakers, it is clear America is ready to stand alongside the other greats of world cheese makers. Here are four of our favorite cheeses, taking you from coast to coast.
  • Shelburne Farms Vermont Cheddar: Shelburne's award winning cheese is only made from the fresh, raw milk of purebred Brown Swiss cows raised on the farm. This spectacular cheese is made in Vermont, aged for two full years, and is noted for its sophisticated, rich flavor that leaves hints of maple and apple. (8 oz.)
  • Grayson: Grayson is an original cheese inspired by farmstead cheeses from northern Italy. This fine example of cheesemaking is handcrafted in Virginia. (8 oz.)
  • Smokey Blue by Rogue Creamery: A classic blue cheese that is cold smoked 16 hours with Oregon Hazelnut shells. The smoking process releases a sweet, creamy, smoky flavor that balances both the sharp blue flavor and sweet, creamy flavor of the 100% natural full cream sustainable milk from Rogue's longstanding partnership with Bonanza View Dairy. (8 oz.)
  • Purple Haze: Purple Haze is a recent addition California cheese maker's Cypress Grove's line of cheeses. Lavender buds mixed with wild harvested fennel pollen give Purple Haze its addicting flavor. Its sweet flavor is wonderful as a dessert with honey and almonds or in a main dish with lamb (4 oz.)

Great little sampler of 3 of americas finest. If your not familiar with these you should definitely try. Maytag is my favorite Blue, and the Grafton Smoked Cheddar was very tasty, with a genuine smoked taste. The Vella was our favorite though, with a texture similar to really aged gouda and a really unique flavor.

Good Except for the Vella Special Select

The Maytag is good but the Maple Smoked Chedar has a very strong smoky smell.
The worst one of the three is Vella Special Select Dry Monterey Jack.
The Vella tastes exactly like a cheap grade of wax and is not fit for human consumption so ended up in the garbage right after I tasted the stuff
