No German Christmas celebration is complete without a Stollen on the table. This yeast-cake is similar to an Italian Panettone, except it is rounded into an oval to represent the infant Jesus in a bundle of swaddling clothes. Dotted with a generous amount of nuts and candied fruits, the traditional Stollen batter is enriched with butter before being baked to golden perfection. Schlünder Butter Stollen is imported from Germany, where they are baked following an authentic recipe for this classic treat.

The sweet, buttery Stollen we know today is quite a different bread than how it originated. Like most Advent foods, Stollen was originally forbidden to contain butter, or anything else that would go against the religious principles of fasting. Only by directly appealing to Pope Innocent X was the butter ban lifted, allowing the light, sweet texture we all know and love!

I had Stolen the first time when my German relative brought it to my family Christmas dinner. I loved it and had a craving for it until I found it in IGourmet. I wish they come in bigger size but this one is better than none at all.

Purchased this for our Christmas desert table. Decided to add it for a Friend that just moved here from Germany. This is a common desert at Christmas in Germany. I had my doubts as to how good it would be. It was Fantastic, and our German guest was impressed and made her feel at home. Thanks!
