Located in:Coffee/Tea, Coffee - Whole Bean
Cultivated in modest quantities on the slopes of the volcano Mauna Loa, these beans take their name from the Kona district on the island of Hawaii. Kona coffee thrives just beneath the snowfalls at elevations of 1,500 to 2,000 feet on the active volcano. Holes are dug with pick axes in order to plant the trees in well packed chunks of volcanic lava, while the plant roots must be surrounded with soil brought in from other parts of the island. Obviously this task is very labor intensive, but the results are well worth the effort.

Just over 20,000 bags a year are offered to the entire coffee industry. True Kona Extra Fancy Kona Coffee, therefore, commands a pretty price. The top graded Kona Coffee is the “Extra Fancy” grade. Extra Fancy beans are very large in size (screen size of 19/64 of an inch), show a uniform bright green color, and are very clean (no chaff, dirt, or husk). The result is very a smooth and well balanced coffee, with medium to full body and acidity and an excellent flavor. Hawaiian Kona is superb choice for coffee lovers who prefer a mild and mellow coffee.
