Irish soda bread has been a staple of the Irish diet since the 1840's. Bicarbonate of soda was introduced to Ireland in the late 1830's, so, instead of using yeast as a leavening agent, they began using bread soda as an alternative.

There are several theories as to the significance of the cross in soda bread. Some believe that the cross was placed in the bread to ward off evil. It is more likely that the cross is used to help with the cooking of the bread or to serve as a guideline for even slices into quarters.

Hogan's Brown Irish Soda Bread mix comes straight from Ireland. A simple recipe just got even easier - just add water, shape, and bake. Soda Bread is used as an accompaniment to any meal. Great for breakfast with lots of butter, or with jam and honey, or just to soak up a good fried breakfast. Great with soup, for sandwiches (try with salmon!), or simply to mop up your gravy at dinner.

Comments about Hogan's Irish Brown Soda Bread Mix:

I've been in Ireland multiple times, and always enjoyed the unique bread that one can find nowhere else. Finally, after a long vacation there we could tolerate it no longer and started searching the Internet. We've found this product and decided to give it a try despite being sceptical enough. (Many do-it-yourself products proved to be faint imitations in the past.) Amazingly, it turned out to be both: easy to bake and very tasty, just like the original stone-ground bread we've savoured in Ireland. Highly recommended to everyone! BTW, it is also a healthy alternative to regular bread, because this one does not contain yeast...

Comments about Hogan's Irish Brown Soda Bread Mix:

This product is what I had hoped it would be: Irish whole wheat flour, whey powder and leavening. With water it bakes into the authentic item with the wheat taste you can't find from American whole wheat flours. Add Irish butter only.

Comments about Hogan's Irish Brown Soda Bread Mix:

My wife and I visited Ireland recently and fell in love with the brown bread that was served with all of the meals. When we returned home we wanted more. This is an easy to make mix and is as good as "the real thing".
