The story of McCann's dates back to 1800 when John McCann built a mill at Beamond, four miles from Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland. In 1898, the company moved to new premises on Merchant's Quay in the town of Drogheda itself. Two years later, the directors recorded with pride that their mills were equipped with all the best modern machinery procurable and were working night and day. In 1964, Odlums acquired the business of John McCann's and transferred production to their own oatmeal mill in Sallins, Co. Kildare, which had itself been in operation since 1910.
Why are McCann's oats so special?
Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into two or three pieces using steel discs. Golden in color and resembling mini rice particles, they are as nature intended - nothing added and nothing taken out. (Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture.)
