Legend tells us that this ancient grain was once eaten exclusively by the Emperors. Today, this medium-size Chinese black rice can be enjoyed everyday and is prized for its delicious nutty taste, soft texture, and beautiful rich, deep purple color. High in nutritional and medicinal value, Forbidden Rice is rich in iron and considered a blood tonifier. Unlike other black rice from Asia, it is not glutinous or rough and cooks in only 30 minutes to produce a superior flavor, texture, and color.

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

Tastes great, I cooked it a little al dente so it was a bit crunchy. The inky goo, if you will, that it sits in after cooking can throw you a bit but it just looks bad that's all. The flavor is sort of nutty and it looks great on your plate. Gets lots of comments from other foodies. Haven't tried it with shrimp or anything else.

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

rice came out a bit grainier than I was used too..I mixed it with Basmati rice, to give a smoother texture to the dish, and to soften the nutty flavor....Everyone loved it

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

Ourple rice is the best rice I have ever tasted. It has a rich auroma and flavorfull nutty taste that complements other foods well or can stand alone as a quick snack from the fridge if percooked. Cleanup is easy if done right away and the inkyness comes from the rice itself looking like the water has turned blake while cooking.
All in all this is rice at its best.

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

[...] Perfectly textured rice if cooked correctly, and pan is easy to clean afterwards, especially if done immediatly. Makes a dramatic presentation, and has a great flavor (even better with some dried cherries added); great with seafood.

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

It looks great in the package, but after it's cooked it sits in a very dark ink that looks black to me. I didn't like the flavor or feel of any of it. I especially didn't like the ink. Just didn't seem like something you should put in your mouth and it didn't add anything to the rest of the food either.

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

I tried it once but didn't care for it; my roommate loved it however; the one review I read is right: it does leave a purple stain on my pan but I think it might come out in time. Rice was too mushy, I like mine w/a bit of crunch like brown rice.

No one was missing out when this was "forbidden." It's an interesting taste, not bad, but mostly a novelty as opposed to a delicacy.

Pros:
Flavorful, High Quality
Best Uses:
Side dish, With nuts and green onion
Bottom Line:

Comments about Forbidden Rice:

Very flavorful, aromatic rice. Soft too. Only disadvantage is that the purple color coats the pan and is a challenge to wash off.
