Salt has been used for thousands of years, not only as a condiment, but also to preserve foods. Nowadays, we take it for granted as the cheapest condiment, but salt was once considered so valuable it was used for currency. When used as a condiment or ingredient, it brightens food flavors and facilitates a balance between sweetness and acidity by decreasing the sourness of acid and increasing the sweetness of sugar.

Today, you'll find some recipes call for a specific type or grind of salt beyond ordinary table salt. Our collection offers some of the most interesting salts available on earth, from ancient seabed salts to seawater salts to salts harvested by the Celtic method, using a 2,000 year old solar evaporation process.
  • Bolivia Rose Salt (Andes Mountain Salt): This exotic salt harvested from the Andes Mountains in Bolivia owes its pink speckled color to its innate wealth of elements and minerals. This is no accident, since the richness of the Bolivian Rose Salt has had plenty of time to germinate, having formed more than three million years ago. It has been sealed into an ancient seabed, assuring that it is the most perfect, preserved, and untouched salt you could imagine. Mild and slightly sweet in flavor. (9.5 oz.)
  • Cyprus Black Lava - Mediterranean Flake Salt: This is a light crystal salt reminiscent of snowflakes which dissolves quickly when applied to food at presentation. Seawaters evaporated by sun and wind produce uniquely flavored, delicate pyramid-shaped crystals. When mixed with activated charcoal, they take on a beautiful color that also imparts the natural detoxifying benefits of charcoal. The finished product is a light, flaky sea salt. (5 oz.)
  • Handcrafted Balinese Sea Salt: Coarse Kechil refers to the smaller, coarse grains of sea salt that appear during periods of hot mornings and rainy afternoons on the islands of Indonesia during salt production. Big Tree Farms’ Handcrafted Balinese Sea Salts are available packaged in recycled paper boxes. Each box is hand-made locally with all printing being done on recycled pape, depicting a photo journey of the salt making process. (8.5 oz.)
  • Sel Gris: Grey Salt is a “moist”, unrefined sea salt usually found on the coastal areas of France. Its light grey, almost light purple color comes from the clay found in the salt flats. The salt is collected by hand using traditional Celtic methods. Grey Salt has gained great fame in the mainstream culinary world in the last few years and is considered by many to be the best quality salt available. (7.5 oz.)
