Grains of Paradise, also known as Melegueta pepper or Guinea pepper, is a rare spice indigenous to the coastal regions of West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Angola. The Melegueta plant, however, is not related to the pepper vine but is a member of the ginger family. The sphere-like seeds of Grains of Paradise look very much like cardamom seeds. (Cardamom is also a member of the ginger family.) Grains of Paradise has a pungent flavor with a peppery bite and hints of cardamom and camphor.

Use it wherever an exotic pepper seasoning is needed, especially in the cuisine of North Africa, including Moroccan and Tunisian dishes. Comes in Nirmala's signature airtight tin, which measures 2-1/2 inches in diameter and 1-3/4 inches in height.

Comments about Grains of Paradise (Melegueta Pepper):

I first heard about it on the food network "GOOD EATS". I simply 'had' to try it. I am so glad I did. I even tried it on vanilla ice cream. It gave it an exotic spicey flavor.
It is also delicious on salads, seafood, and on butter spreads.
I have recommened it to my friends and will be reordering.

Comments about Grains of Paradise (Melegueta Pepper):

I found this spice to have a wonderful warming heat that gradually intensifies on the tongue.
This hot peppery taste is pungent with notes of
citrus and woody evergreen.A nice bitter under- tone and a slight numbing effect in the mouth,
which is not altogether unpleasent.
A very nice spice that I welcome to my cooking.
From soups to vegatables, let your palate be your guide for this rediscovered spice.
