Whiskey traces its roots to the origin of the distilling process, invented by the Celts in the British Isles. It is not known exactly when the first whiskey was produced, as some say the 10th century while others say the 15th century. There are several spellings of the original word —
uisge beatha (Scots Gaelic) and
usquebaugh (Irish) are just two. It is pronounced wee-ska-bah, which means “water of life.” Produced in Great Britain and Ireland, the recipe was brought by the Scottish and Irish settlers to North America. Whiskey can be smoky, rich, oaky, sweet, peaty, spicy - and always warming. Whether bourbon's your drink, single malts, or just plain old whiskey is your pleasure, we have chosen 3 of the most versatile cheeses to match with this amber “water of life”.
-
Whisky Cheddar : This particular luscious, tangy, authentic English Cheddar has an additional allure. It blends sweet Farmhouse Cheddar with a whisper of extra fine single malt Scotch Whisky, giving the cheese a slight smoky bite.
-
San Simon : San Simon is aged 2-4 weeks in Spain, lightly pressed and then gently smoked for 2 weeks after leaving the mold. Inside its red, polished brown rind, San Simon has a creamy, buttery, smoky flavor that ranges from mild to piquant.
-
Beemster Classic Extra Aged Farmhouse Gouda : This edible Dutch masterpiece has matured for eighteen months, allowing its body to develop a muted caramel color, matched by a uniquely intense yet sweet flavor.
These cheeses come resting upon a very unique cheese board. Made from a real Makers Mark bottle! The original labeled bottle is used, high temperatures slowly melts it and is cooled slowly over 17 hours. The bottle and knife are hand dipped into red wax. Each bottle is unique and made one at a time without any molds.
