Banon is a northern Provençal cheese that comes in a 2.8-ounce mini wheel, traditionally washed with eau-de-vie (marc), wrapped in chestnut or grape leaves, and tied with raffia. Depending on the season, it can be made of pure goat, pure cow, or a blend of the two. This Banon is brought to us by Le Vache de Chalais. It tastes best after having ripened for a few weeks. During this time, it develops a smoother texture and rich flavor. Ripening often results in a small amount of edible blue mold under the wrapper. This mold helps to develop the flavor of the cheese. This cheese has a woodsy, fruity flavor that goes well with fresh fruit and sweet dessert wines.

  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk or goat's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 3.5 oz. form of cheese.
  • Best enjoyed within seven days of delivery.

Horrible. Overripe and Nasty
Received twice and both times were inedible. Runny and smelly, it had no suggestion of a woodsy or fruity flavor.

The Perfect Soft
I'm adventurous, but you don't have to be in order to appreciate this cheese. It compares well with the best of Brie but has a more indepth flavor to it. Room temp is perfect, but I would not heat it up. Love the leaves it comes wrapped in!

Outstanding flavor and best soft cheese
Excellent complex flavor with a buttery flavor. This is undoubtedly the best soft cheese I've ordered to date. Thank you for continuing to support our gourmet tastes in Afghanistan. [...]

Excellent quality
We found this cheese to be delightful. We used it for dinner (with a selection of other cheeses) and, on a separate occasion as an appetizer. It is smooth, perfectly rich and lasts longer than the recommended 7 days. It does gain a stronger flavor over time.

quite a surprise
This product was rather a bad surprise. It was overly soft to the point that it could not be cut into portions. It was close to being a semi thick liquid. It had to be scrapped off of the wrapper leaves with a spoon. There was no rind. It did not resemble at all the photo.I was very disappointed after seeing the previous ratings.

Yes Yes Yes
This is one of the best creamy soft goat I have tasted in years. Its rich and nutty flavors will absolutely please you. Better with bread. Unbelievable with a fresh baggette.

Bit dungy but gorgeous in a cowy way
Its all in the title. Great cheese with good cheese board conversation prompting potential. Dangerous if you eat alone, might start talking to yourself.

Smoooth
A fine product including a bit of ritualized unwrapping.
