The geographical region encompassing the former country of Flanders contains two Belgian provinces, present-day Nord (France), and the southern part of Zeeland (Holland) known as Zeeuws-Vlaanderen ("Sealandic Flanders"). This area is very well known for flax, a useful flowering plant that grows wild throughout Europe, but is especially abundant in Flanders. Famous throughout history, flax was used by the ancient Egyptian and Roman civilizations to make paper and linen. Today it is still used to make linseed oil and printing ink.

The recipe for this cheese from Zeeuws-Vlaanderen dates back many centuries. Its name means "Flax Cheese", owing not to an ingredient but to the plant that dominates the local countryside. Still made in an old-fashioned manner, in the Middle Ages it was quite popular and always served at the annual oogstfeest (Flemish harvest festival). Similar to Gouda but richer, creamier and deeper yellow in color, Vlaskaas' purple rind distinguishes it from all other cheeses.

Shipping Problem
The order was ok except UPS held the shipment over 24 hours in Atlanta in 80F. The cheese almost spoiled.

Like Gouda but better
My favorite of the Beemster cheeses so far! Not as strong as the aged Gouda yet has a creamy, nutty, salty, caramel hint. Love it!

lactose free cheese !!!!
This dutch cheese is wonderful tasting and great for cheese and crackers or for fondue, but it's most extraordinary feature is that somehow, in it's unique processing, lactose sugar is eliminated and it can be eaten by people who are lactose intolerant. (like me) It is the ONLY cheese I've ever heard of that is lactose free and I plan to order tons of it over the next few years.

Beemster Vlaskaas - the best!

Lactose FREE! And tasty too!
I am VERY lactose-intolerant, and recently discovered Beemster Vlaskaas cheese. A man at a speciality cheese shop recommended it to me, and he was absolutely right! The cheese is quite delicious. The flavor is KIND OF like American cheese/Velveeta BUT... the cheese is a firmer texture and not as moist. Also it is just a TINY bit less sweet (so it can be used and enjoyed by people who are used to that kind of cheese without much adaptation). However, my pallet was quite delighted to enjoy cheese again without piles of pills. I had many pieces of this cheese over several days and had NO lactose issues whatsoever (and I am VERY sensitive to lactose). The Beemster brand website says that some of their other cheeses are also lactose-free. I look forward to trying them as well. Thank you, Beemster, for giving me back the wonderful taste of cheese!

Cheese excellent but rind was very thick!
The rind was very thick about 3/8" & inedible. The cheese was delicious but I would not buy again because of the rind.

Amazing, smooth, unique flavor. Not easy to find. Delicious on a bland cracker or chunk of bread.

Great taste and textture
I personally love this cheese and when it is around, that's the only cheese I want to eat. Have not tried it for anything except to snack on with a glass of red wine.... yummy!
