Unlike our other French Camembert, this one comes from Normandy, where Camembert was first created in 1791 by Marie Harel. During the French Revolution, a recalcitrant priest from Brie (the village, not the cheese) arrived at the Manor of Beaumoncel in the village of Camembert and was hidden there by Marie Harel, a farmer. Following the direction of this priest, she created Camembert. The recipe was a success and her children and grandchildren continued the family tradition. Over time, word spread and Marie's cheese became famous all over the world.

Camembert Le Châtelain is an excellent example, with a recipe that is true to the original. It is succulent, ripe, rich and creamy. Only gently pasteurized at moderate temperatures, Camembert Le Châtelain retains most of the authentic flavors and qualities of the raw-milk cheese you can buy only in France. Excellent served with light reds from the Loire Valley or champagne, in Normandy this cheese is paired with an apple liqueur called Calvados. Apples, Camembert and Normandy are inextricably linked. Norman dairy farms are peppered with apple trees that protect the rich soil. In fact, some people claim to be able to taste a hint of apple beneath the creamy suppleness of fresh Camembert.

Novices beware: this authentic Camembert is aromatic!

  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 8.8 oz. form of cheese.
  • Best enjoyed within seven days of delivery.

Lechatelain Camembert
I had high expectations. I have had this cheese before and it was excellent. The texture was like plastic and had no taste.

Chatelain French camembert
Just perfect, I was worry about age, because camenbert becomes very strong in taste after a while.Hope the next one will be the same, or even younger. The chatelain was perfect like I bought it in a French store.I recommend it.Very fast shipping.

a very strong camembert
This is a very strong camembert....not my favorite camembert for flavor....a bit overpowering so I would suggest it's not good for everybody's palette. Camembert is a strong cheese which I am used to but this one didn't seem to have the interesting woody notes or truly rich flavors I am used to a good camembert. But for pairing with tart apples or asian pears, it worked fine.

Le chatelain camembert
I think it had past its prime time. Not much taste. I have had this cheese several times in the past year and it was much better. I think they are industriling the making of it, as I can find it at Sams club.

The best camembert available in US
Certainly the best Camembert you can find in the US, especially knowing it's made with pasteurized milk. Of course, it has to be kept in the refrigerator but don't forget to get it out at least one hour before consuming so it's soft and full of flavor.

Finally Found an Authentic Camembert!
I have shopped around locally and tried various brands of camembert and was always so disappointed. The most amazing camembert that I ever had came from a cheese shop in a small village in southern France. That aroma was so 'aromatic' that the hotel room I shared with my traveling companion could not weather the overhwhelming pungency of that particular cheese. This came a close second to that experience. I am very satisfied with having this 'Camembert de Chatelain' available for me.

Cameembert
Both camemberts were over-ripe to the point of being almost inedible. This is the first time that we have ever had overripe product from your company.
