The best grades of Costa Rican coffee are grown in four districts surrounding the capital of San Jose. These four districts - Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Heredia and Alajuela - are ideal locations for the cultivation of coffee. Blessed with well-drained volcanic soil suitable for growing coffee, Costa Rica has been growing Arabica coffee of an excellent quality since its industry started in 1779.
