Edel de Cleron is a virtual copy of a famous cheese from the Jura Mountains called Vacherin du Haut-Doubs (another name for Vacherin Mont d'Or). The only difference is that Edel de Cleron is pasteurized, making it legal for export to the United States. Each wheel is banded with a strip of bark, giving the cheese a woodsy character and artisan appearance. Slightly aged, just enough to develop an oozy, runny interior, Edel de Cleron is a masterful little gem that is at home at any cheese party.

Not a chèvre?!
Leave it out in room temperature for two hours and you would not know it was not made from lait cru - and from goat milk, to boot! (but that's not the case) Wonderful. (a translation as creamy or mellow doesn't do it justice)

Just Ok
This is a cheese for the more adventurous cheese lover in that it requires genuine bark to be peeled off before eating. I was very intrigued by this bark wrap and imagined Edel de Cleron to reflect this in its flavor. But it really doesn't... The bark slightly flavors this cheese right where it comes in contact with it at the rind but other than that there is not all that much to it. I missed complexity and also don't think it was very unusual in flavor once I got more toward the center of the piece. Probably wouldn't but again.

a bit of misinformation
Edel de Cleron is French and a plausible analogue to Vacherin Mont d'Or. However, the earlier review may have expected a cheese that approaches Vacherin du Haut-Doubs and was understandably disappointed. Vacherin Mont d'Or is an AOC and made in Jura mountains and foothills in the Canton of Vaud. It is made with pasteurized milk. Vacherin du Haut-Doubs is the unpasteurized French version from Comte adjacent to Vaud. Otherwise the distinction is merely in name - by agreement after a long standing argument about who made the cheese first, who owns the name, etc. I believe that Vacherin du Haut-Doubs can be sold as Mont d'Or within France though. Disappointed with cheese. Lacked flavour
This cheese was supposed to be comparable to Vacherin Mont d'Or. It falls flat. Not even in the same ballpark.
