At the start of the 20th century, Luigi Lazzaris & Son founded a small pastry shop in Conegliano Veneto, Italy. After much experimenting, he invented a sweet, spicy delicacy by mixing sugar, quince, candied fruit, and mustard oil together. Over the past 100 years, his confection has won many prizes. Although it was originally produced for a Christmas treat, mostarda is now consumed all year round.

Mostardas originated in the 17th century when farming families prepared a special flour, mustard, vinegar, candied fruit, and wine must dressing (wine must is how the recipe adopted the name mostarda) for their holiday celebrations. Modern mostarda is made from fruit, sugar and mustard oil. Our varieties include:

  • Apricot: Ideal with cold cuts and game or on buttered toast.
  • Pear: perfect with Parmesan and Grana Padano or any aged, robust cheese.
  • Orange: a combination of orange varieties and pure quality mustard oil; its sweet and sour taste is a perfect partner for roast duck, chicken, game and fresh, creamy cheeses.
  • Fig: The fig has been used over the years to embellish simple dishes or adorn aristocratic recipes. An excellent accompaniment to game, hams and fresh or slightly mature cheeses.
  • Cherry: Made with the world famous Italian Amarena cherry. Excellent with sheep's milk cheeses or lamb.
  • Wild Berry: Made with wild harvested berries taken from the Venetian countryside. Pairs perfectly with deli meats and goat cheeses.
Varieties sold separately.

Very good but sweeter than expected & not much mustard flavor. Will try others to see if they are similar. Great for mixing with a bit of brown mustard as pork marinade.

Fruited Mustard Sauces
i love these sauces. They are great with cheese or with meats, fish or chicken. When my 5 sauces arrived two were broken. I called them and they couldn't have been nicer and more apologetic. The packers had not individually wrapped the sauces. She immediately sent 2 replacements and they were wrapped perfectly.

Fruited Mustard Sauce
We first experienced the pear mustard sauce while we were in Italy. We loved the spicey kick and pear sweetness with a sharp cheese and crackers or crusty breads. We were very glad to be able to buy it here from igourmet!

Pear Mustard Sauce by Lazzaris & Son
We had this wonderful spread in a restaurant in a beautiful piazza in Lucca this summer. I had been searching for it here in the US since we returned and was delighted to find it at It is sweet but tangy and is perfect served with a variety of cheeses, especially italian, both hard and soft.

tasty enough but too expensive for the size; prefer the mostardas that have pieces of fruit in them

As Delicious as I Remember
I found this product for the first time while working at a small fromagerie in Maryland and fell in love. For many years I couldn't find anymore of it until I found this site. Years later, that zingy mustard and sweet citrus flavor is just as great as I remember - a great accompaniment for provolone piccante, cured hams, and a ton of other foods. Highly recommended, and remember that a little goes a long way with this stuff.

Fruited mustard Sauces
DELICIOUS. Scrumptious. I come form an area of Italy where these sauces are very popular, Great to accompany any meat, honey-baked ham included, and cotechino, also available through I just wish the sauces were sold in bigger, reasonably priced jars.

Unique & Flavor Enhancing
First tasted the orange & fig flavors in Tuscany and brought home a jar. So glad I can find these here. All flavors are great but my favorites are the fig and pear. Fabulous accompanyment for cheeses. Wish there were larger jars to order!
