Christmas Pudding originated in the 14th century as a porridge called frumenty. It was eaten as a fasting dish in preparation for the Christmas festivities. By 1595, it was evolving into a plum pudding thickened with eggs, bread crumbs, dried fruit, and ale or spirits. In 1664, the Puritans banned it saying it was a "lewd tradition", unfit for "god fearing people". Later, George I ate it, loved it, and re-established this pudding as a Christmas feast tradition (despite upsetting the Quakers). By Victorian times, the pudding had evolved to what we eat today and has remained a British tradition. Our Christmas Pudding is handmade in England with Hennessy Cognac. Over 68 million Brits will be eating a Christmas Pudding over the holidays. Why not join in the tradition? Serve it topped with brandy butter. (sold separately).

densely wonderful
exactly as described. thick, dense, very rich and fruity. But, this is a very small item. For the 4 of us, we should have ordered 2 puddings. we added brandy butter - great tradition.

A sweet tooth's delight
This was a gift for my father, but he was gracious enough to share it with me. We ate it warmed, with brandy butter drizzled on top, and it was absolutely heavenly. A couple of other family members tried a bite and found it too sweet for their tastes, but it's perfect for someone who loves rich desserts. I only wish it came in a larger size!

Small size
I read previous reviews about the small size and have to agree, it is very small. However, it is also very rich (especially with the sauce added on top)and after a big meal, splitting it between four people adds just the right finish.

Good things come in small packages
I ordered the Christmas Pudding as a special surprise for my step father who was born and raised in Barnsley, England. Although it had a wonderful taste, you could stand to make it a tad bit bigger. There was 4 of us at dinner. Thank God I ordered 2.

Brings back wonderful memories of a suitcase stuffed with various Sainsbury's Christmas puddings one November several years ago upon a return trip from London.

this is a great old British tradition that is great to do every year here in the US. Loved it and will do it every year
