Patterned after the traditional Alpine cheeses with a natural brushed rind, Mountaineer is a semi-hard cheese with a smooth supple texture and occasional small eyes. Aged in cellars a minimum of six months, Mountaineer develops a complex flavor, predominately nutty and sweet with hints of butterscotch. The cheese makers at Meadow Creek have actually been making Mountaineer since their second year, but it truly came into its own after their trip to Europe in 2004. It was there that they had the chance to taste the great Alpine cheeses of Valle d'Aosta and Savoie regions. This crystallized their vision of what Mountaineer should be: a dense, complex cheese aged in the European style that reflects Meadow Creek's own mountainous territory.
Meadow Creek Dairy is a family farm in the mountains of southwest Virginia. At an elevation of 2800ft, the combination of pure water, clean air and deep soils produce an ideal environment for growing diverse, mineral-rich pastures. The taste of Meadow Creek cheeses reflects the diverse pastures and soils of the region. They have created a variety of unique cheeses to showcase the herd's quality milk. Meadow Creek uses only fresh, unpasteurized milk from our own Grade A dairy.
