The Franche-Comte region is the coldest region in France. During the winter, local farmers made small rounds of cheese to utilize the winter milk that was so difficult to deliver to the Comte cooperatives. The result was "Vachelins," made in this region since the 12th century. Louis XV loved this type of cheese for the smoothness and the consistency of paste.

Vacherin Mont d'Or (golden mountain) is a washed rind cheese that is so creamy that it can be eaten with a spoon. Many cut the top off so it can be served by the spoonful, others open it up and let it seep out while eating the delicious rind with it. Each wheel is wrapped with a resinous, aromatic strip of spruce bark. This prevents this creamy cheese from collapsing and has the added benefit of imparting its flavor to the cheese. Vacherin has an amazing woodsy, nutty aroma and flavor and pairs well with fruit and fruity wines such as Beaujolais or Côte du Jura.

  • Vacherin Mont d'Or is best enjoyed within seven days.
  • Made from cow's milk.

I Hid This Cheese and Didn't Share
Oh yeah, great cheese, very smooth and creamy. Buy 2 and share one ... Take the other one to your room and eat it by yourself ... seriously fabulous taste ...

Disappointing.
When trying new cheeses, I can usually find at least one redeeming quality in it. I was very disappointed in this cheese - It had a very overpowering bitter aftertaste that I just couldn't get past. I'm sure it's a wonderful taste for some but it definitely wasn't for me.

Best Cheese
Best cheese ever - mont d'or types are extremely creamy. Will entice the beginning cheese buff as well as the old guard

perfect
Great cheese, added 2 gloves of garlic and two tablespoons of white wine when baking the cheese and it was super!

It is *NOT* Vacherin Mont d'Or tough.
I re-post a review with 3 stars to iGourmet, because this cheese is *NOT* Vacherin Mont d'Or, and chance is that you will order it before realizing this fact, because of a misleading description. The label says "type" but the rest of the description describes Vacherin Mont d'Or. I would say that it is too blend for eating raw (in comparison to the Mont d'Or), but it is awesome if you are planing to bake it; it tastes a bit like a fondue, an presents really well when you burn a bit the rim of the wooden case during the baking process).

Awesome!
Be sure to google "Baked Vacherin Mont d'Or" before you open it, and take a recipe with white wine and garlic!

Fine experience
The texture and flavor blended pleasurably on French bread. No disappointment. I'll do it again.

Not what I've gotten before
Vacherin Mon d'Or has been yearly treat for the past few years, but this was not the same cheese I've purchased before. This was pasteurized, bland, and overwhelmingly disappointing.
