The Franche-Comte region is the coldest region in France. During the winter, local farmers made small rounds of cheese to utilize the winter milk that was so difficult to deliver to the Comte cooperatives. The result was "Vachelins," made in this region since the 12th century. Louis XV loved this type of cheese for the smoothness and the consistency of paste.

Vacherin Mont d'Or (golden mountain) is a washed rind cheese that is so creamy that it can be eaten with a spoon. Many cut the top off so it can be served by the spoonful, others open it up and let it seep out while eating the delicious rind with it. Each wheel is wrapped with a resinous, aromatic strip of spruce bark. This prevents this creamy cheese from collapsing and has the added benefit of imparting its flavor to the cheese. Vacherin has an amazing woodsy, nutty aroma and flavor and pairs well with fruit and fruity wines such as Beaujolais or Côte du Jura.

  • Vacherin Mont d'Or is best enjoyed within seven days.
  • Made from cow's milk.

Fine experience
The texture and flavor blended pleasurably on French bread. No disappointment. I'll do it again.

Not what I've gotten before
Vacherin Mon d'Or has been yearly treat for the past few years, but this was not the same cheese I've purchased before. This was pasteurized, bland, and overwhelmingly disappointing.

Not as fresh as I have had before
I have ordered this exact cheese from a local French cafe many times before and this cheese is usually very soft and creamy. This was the first time ordering from igourmet.com and I was quite disappointed. The cheese was not soft and ccreamy. The flavor was still good, however, not as fresh, therefore I probably won't order it again from igourmet.com

Would Buy Again
This is a bit smelly but the taste is mild. I loved it on a cheese plate with dates. The sweet taste of the dates complimented the wonderful flavor of the cheese.

Vacherin Mont D'Or
This cheese is by far the most indulgent, gastronimic delight I have ever tasted. If you can find it in the US - just buy it and relish the delights of this very stinky cheese...... Choose a bland cracker with it so that the flavor of the cheese can really be truly appreciated

Creamy, but lacking in taste
This just doesn't have the kind of flavor a Vacherin should have. The least flavorful Vacherin I've ever eaten.

C'est si bon!
Great quality product! Being French and coming from "the Franche Comte" I know what I am talking about. I was surprised to find out that I could buy The Mont d'or online and amazed of the quality of the product. The taste is as I remember, Delicious... Once you try it, you would be hooked! Perfect for cozy, easy meal: You just need to melt the cheese (Insert a couple of shallots + Pour over the surface 1/4 cup of dry wine), place it in the oven for 35 minutes, serve it with potatoes and Voila!

Delectable:Vacherin & a baguette
We've delighted in Vacherin Mont d'or, having vacationed in Switzerland for 20 years. To find it here was a wonderful surprise. Our only regret is that vacherin is available such a short time during the year.
