Family farms in Iowa provide the exceptionally fresh milk that forms the backbone of Prairie Breeze's smooth, grassy flavor. Prairie Breeze is characterized as a hybrid between cheddar and the Alpine-style of Emmental cheeses. Yet it has nutty tones and a savory finish that distinguish it from all other cheddars. It's this interplay on the palate that keeps you reaching for "just one more" taste of this unique cheese. Although drier in texture than cheddar, it still melts well when you're looking to add a subtle nuance to your culinary endeavors. Milton Creamery, located in the Village of Milton, nestled in the rural countryside of Southeast Iowa, is where the Musser's, Rufus, Jane and Galen, find joy and fulfillment in their chosen occupation - handcrafting artisan cheeses.

The Mussers use high quality milk with no added RBST, produced on small Amish farms in the surrounding area to make an elite line of specialty cheese. Local farmers use time-honored methods, such as grazing in season, hand milking, and cooling the milk in bulk tanks. The Mussers bring the fresh milk into the plant, pasteurize it and make small batches of cheese using a special blend of cultures and a labor-intensive process for unique flavorful cheeses. The result is an array of artisan cheeses to tempt any appetite. Gute appetite!

What’s the best way to store my cheese?
The best way to keep cheese fresh is to store it in the vegetable crisper in your fridge. Before doing so, wrap in parchment or wax paper, then wrap loosely in plastic wrap. You can also buy our exclusive cheese storage bags, specially created to keep your cheese fresher, longer.

Unless used for cooking, we don’t recommend storing cheese in the freezer as this will alter its texture.

What is the best temperature to serve my cheese?
Remove cheese from the fridge an hour before serving, as cheese is best experienced at room temperature to enjoy the full spectrum of flavors.

How long will my cheese stay fresh in the refrigerator?
The length of time cheeses last in the fridge after opening depends largely on the type of cheese. Soft varieties tend to spoil more quickly than hard varieties. Please refer to the table below for a convenient reference:

How We Ship

FreshWave Packaging

Our products are always shipped so they will arrive at your door in optimal condition! We’ve carefully selected packaging options that have minimal impact on the environment without compromising on food safety or quality.

For perishable orders, we line our shipping boxes with Tempguard - a unique, padded insulator made of 100% pre-consumer recycled paper material. We further control the temperature with recycled kraft paper fill and non-toxic frozen gel packs. In the summer months, we may include dry ice to ensure fresh delivery in very hot weather.

Note: Please join our efforts to be mindful of our environment and extend the life-cycle of our packaging, by recycling your shipping box, Tempguard liner, and kraft fill (all 100% curbside recyclable!). Store the gel packs in your freezer and reuse to keep your next picnic or road trip fare cool.
