This wonderful cheese comes to us from the volcanic island of the same name in Portugal's Azores archipelago. Littered with giant craters, the island is also home to vast, lush, natural green pastures. When colonized by the Flemish in the 15th Century, cheese production was introduced to the island, with cows brought over from the mainland. Still made in the traditional farmhouse way, this cheddar-y cheese is made from unpasteurized cow's milk and aged for over 120 days. Its hard, inedible, natural rind gives way to a lighter colored interior with tiny, irregular holes. Sao Jorge is incredibly versatile, lending its tangy, slightly peppery undertones well to sauces, it is equally delicious served cubed into a salad or chunked and eaten with a crusty baguette.

Sao Jorge cheese
Way too expensive at $12.99 for 7.5 ounces. You said it was made using unpasteurized cow's milk. It did not taste like it. I bought same cheese recently in Portugal and it had a sharper flavor. Same cheese at [ ], in Santa Clara for $9.95 for a whole pound. [ ] for $9.95 a pound . . .

Just like I remembered it
My husband and I enjoyed this cheese on our honeymoon in the Açores and it has become a favourite dessert treat: thinly-sliced cheese, thinly-sliced pineapple, drizzled honey and crushed pink peppercorns. We shared this with our dinner guests and it was a success all around!

Excellent cheese, a bit expensive though
I often buy this cheese from a Portuguese bakery near my apartment. They carry two kinds: one kind has a less pungent, almost buttery flavour (sort of creamy). I don't care for that kind. The 2nd kind they have has a very strong, pungent taste; I simply cannot get enough of it! I like to eat slices of the cheese on freshly-made Portuguese-style buns (the ones from the bakery always have wonderful "crunch" to them when they're fresh) and some salted butter spread on the bun. The cheese is VERY popular; they usually get one wheel of each kind every Thursday, and by Friday afternoon both are entirely sold out.

I like this cheese
I really like this cheese, though it does not smell too good...kinda like stinky feet...lol...but it does taste really good with some Portuguese bread...

Sets me back to the Azores
I remember eating this cheese for the first time on a French baguette with just butter and the cheese. I love the tangy flavor.

Sao Jorge Cheese

Strong & Piquant
Tasty along with other cheeses, fruit (especially apples) olives, crusty bread and wine. We tried it with apricot chutney and the flavors meshed wonderfully.

1st order was wonderful - see last year's excellent review. 2nd was OK but had a bit if a tang that I can't compare anything to, but could only eat slowly. This time tang was more noticable. Don't think it was spoiled, sometimes a problem in shipping to FL, since this is now wintertime. So will only reorder occasionally. Not exactly like cheddar, not exactly like anchovies, just tangy.

Not for me...
I bought this based on the reviews. I love to try new cheeses, and I am not afraid of a strong cheese. But this had a funny under-taste, to me. The only word I can think of to describe it is manure. It had a vague taste of the smell of cow manure. I tried serving it with thinly sliced apple, as someone in the reviews suggested, and that did make it more palatable, but it was still not something I would choose to eat. So, I did what I always do when I want to get rid of something but I feel guilty throwing away...I gave it to my sister. When I first gave it to her, she said she thought it was okay. Then she called me when she got home, and she said that upon tasting it again, it reminded her of the taste of wet tobacco. So, my sister did what she does when she feels guilty about throwing food away, and she gave it to her dog, who loves cheese. Her dog loves chedder, blue, and mozzarella, but she wouldn't eat this, either. So it is a big no for all of us, but clearly, there are fans out there.
