This wonderful cheese comes to us from the volcanic island of the same name in Portugal's Azores archipelago. Littered with giant craters, the island is also home to vast, lush, natural green pastures. When colonized by the Flemish in the 15th Century, cheese production was introduced to the island, with cows brought over from the mainland. Still made in the traditional farmhouse way, this cheddar-y cheese is made from unpasteurized cow's milk and aged for over 120 days. Its hard, inedible, natural rind gives way to a lighter colored interior with tiny, irregular holes. Sao Jorge is incredibly versatile, lending its tangy, slightly peppery undertones well to sauces, it is equally delicious served cubed into a salad or chunked and eaten with a crusty baguette.
  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 20 lb. form of cheese.

Sets me back to the Azores
I remember eating this cheese for the first time on a French baguette with just butter and the cheese. I love the tangy flavor.

Sao Jorge Cheese
The most appreciated gift this Christmas. Absolutely fresh and delicious and delivered much faster than expected in more than adequate packaging. We'll be ordering more soon!

Strong & Piquant
Tasty along with other cheeses, fruit (especially apples) olives, crusty bread and wine. We tried it with apricot chutney and the flavors meshed wonderfully.

inconsistent
1st order was wonderful - see last year's excellent review. 2nd was OK but had a bit if a tang that I can't compare anything to, but could only eat slowly. This time tang was more noticable. Don't think it was spoiled, sometimes a problem in shipping to FL, since this is now wintertime. So will only reorder occasionally. Not exactly like cheddar, not exactly like anchovies, just tangy.

Not for me...
I bought this based on the reviews. I love to try new cheeses, and I am not afraid of a strong cheese. But this had a funny under-taste, to me. The only word I can think of to describe it is manure. It had a vague taste of the smell of cow manure. I tried serving it with thinly sliced apple, as someone in the reviews suggested, and that did make it more palatable, but it was still not something I would choose to eat. So, I did what I always do when I want to get rid of something but I feel guilty throwing away...I gave it to my sister. When I first gave it to her, she said she thought it was okay. Then she called me when she got home, and she said that upon tasting it again, it reminded her of the taste of wet tobacco. So, my sister did what she does when she feels guilty about throwing food away, and she gave it to her dog, who loves cheese. Her dog loves chedder, blue, and mozzarella, but she wouldn't eat this, either. So it is a big no for all of us, but clearly, there are fans out there.

Not a favorite
There is something about the flavor of this cheese that I don't care for. Many reviews compared it to cheddar. I don't see it. The hardness was more like parmesan. My husband put his finger on the unusual flavor when he said "it tastes like anchovies." He liked it, but he likes anchovies.

Not for the cheese wusses
This cheese rocks, but be warned: it is a strong flavored cheese. Make sure to pair with something substantial or perhaps sweet.

My #1 favorite
The best. I eat for breakfast or lunch as-is. A constant reorder. Wife & friends like it a lot.

First time ordering, won't be my last. Big flavor with loooong finish. Imagine cheddar with Portuguese heart & soul.....delicious.

Womderful!
Sao Jorge is a Cheddar-type with a twist. There's a distinct undertone of Smithfield ham! Strange, but makes it absolutely distinctive - not to mention delicious.
