Winner of the 2001 Best Exported British Cheese Award, Stinking Bishop is a washed rind cheese dating back to the Cistercian monks who once settled in Dymock where this cheese is made. Our variety is now made by Charles Martell, who works endlessly to carry on the traditional products of Gloucestershire. Washed in fermented pear juice (also called "Perry"), the cheese develops a stinky, pungent, orange-colored, sticky rind as Brevibacterium linens ripen the cheese from the inside out. At room temperature, this cheese will run across a plate. Named after the Stinking Bishop pear varietal from Gloucestershire, this cheese is a spectacular dairy experience.
  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.
  • Suitable for vegetarians.
  • Photo depicts whole 4.5 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

It Stinks
It stinks...and I love it. I love Espoisses first, then this. Can't go wrong.

Finelly got some
I was glad to see it was in stock again. I had read the reviews on it & kept trying to get some. But it always seems to be out. So you had some in, I got some this time. I really like the taste. The smell is really strong. But its well worth it.

Fantastic...if you can get it!
Hard to find cheese is a conversation starter due to it's pungent aroma and interesting taste.

One of my very favorite cheeses!
I first tasted Stinking Bishop when I was in London a month ago and fell in love immediately. Upon returning to the US I searched the internet for a US source. I was thrilled to find igourmet.com as a supplier of Stinking Bishop cheese. I ordered two 1/2 pound packages and have just finished eating the first one. It was every bit as tasty and wonderful as what I had in London. Thank you igourmet.com!

Stinking Bishop Cheese
We are always looking for this cheese, as we buy it for our owners of the company. We were so very grateful you finally got it in stock and are hoping to be able to continue to buy it without such a delay the next time. Thank you!

Amazingly delicious cheese
If you're expecting a stinky, strong cheese, you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a truly great cheese, buy it! This is a uniquely-flavored cheese, and possibly my all-time favorite. It is a gooey, creamy delight that has an initial pear-flavored sweetness that transforms into a somewhat bitter long finish. An absolute delight. Postnote - I don't know why the description says 'stinky' - none I've had would qualify. But, try it!

Unapologetically disgusted
One evening the cheese plate at Scarista House, a five-star B&B on the isle of Harris, in the Hebrides, had on offer "the Stinking Bihsop, aka the Stinking Kennedy Bishop". Who could resist? " Not for the faint of heart!", they warned. I am an adventurous eater, and the food at Scarista House had been nothing short of fabulous. But this cheese was, to my palate, the equivalent of creamy vomit. Never in my life had prepared me for the comlete revulsion I experienced. I find these wonderful reviews astonishing!

Definitely an aromatic cheese, but GOOD!
Excellent 'stinky' cheese, it melts in your mouth and on your hands, the knife, cutting board, etc.
