The literal translation of the French words "Tete de Moine" is "Monk Head". Although this fine Swiss product was first created by monks, it is now produced by the lay community. Tete de Moine, made in the Swiss Alps near the town of Bellelay from rich unpasteurized cows' milk, is a sharp cheese with a full, nutty flavor. Its intense flavor is even more pronounced when compared to other cheeses from Switzerland, like Gruyere and Emmental. A true specialty item, Tete de Moine deserves to be regarded as one of the world's great cheeses.

MUCH better
THIS order was exactly like the cheese we brought back from Switzerland; vaccuum-sealed, with the annoying outer rind that ensures it's freshness. We are on the second wheel so I'll be back in a week or two to order another two! THANKS igourmet for allowing me to go to Switzerland in my dreams with every bite!!

Tete de Moine- half wheel
This is the best, most flavorful cheese, used with a cheese cutter that shaves it into a circular fan so presentation cannot be beat. I was happy to see the half wheel, though the flavor lasts, one needs a large party to finish a full wheel off quickly.

like always the tete de moine cheese was wonderful.i had to wait a couple of weeks for it to come available but i did.if you like cheese you have to try this one.its one of the greatest.i always keep it in my frigerater.so go on and try some today..

Beware of cut
While the cheese was good. It was cut vertically like a half moon, so it couldnt be used on a girolle and "shaved" off the rounder, which is the whole point.

Maybe it's me?
I tasted this cheese while living in France and loved it. However the cheese that I ordered here was extremely different. The smell was extremely strong, much stronger than I remembered. Was it too mature? I am unsure. I bought a Girolle especially for this, so I will probably try it again in the future just to determine if it was the cheese or just my taste...
