The literal translation of the French words "Tete de Moine" is "Monk Head". Although this fine Swiss product was first created by monks, it is now produced by the lay community. Tete de Moine, made in the Swiss Alps near the town of Bellelay from rich unpasteurized cows' milk, is a sharp cheese with a full, nutty flavor. Its intense flavor is even more pronounced when compared to other cheeses from Switzerland, like Gruyere and Emmental. A true specialty item, Tete de Moine deserves to be regarded as one of the world's great cheeses.
  • Made from raw cow's milk. Aged over 60 days.

disappointed
Initial cuttings are dry. This cheese should be relatively moist. Hopefully only the top is so dry.

Great flavor but a bit dried out upon arrival
After bringing back two wheels freshly vaccuum-packed straight from Switzerland, we had hoped the two wheels we ordered from igourmet would be of the same freshness and quality. And while the taste was still wonderful, the wheels arrived wrapped in foil and a bit dried out. It took a bit more carving off of the rubbery dried bits to find the sweet, nutty taste we have become addicted to. So until we can bring more tete du moine back ourselves we will order again from igourmet.

Tete de Moine
The cheese was delicious and in perfect condition. The size of the wheel, however, was 1.8 lbs. rather than the 2 lbs. as advertised.

OK but not the best
Decent but certainly not the best Tete de Moine we've had. Flavor was good but the wheel tended to crack and dry out quickly while being strangely rubbery at the same time.

So yummy!
This was delicious! I had purchased a Giroule cutter when I was in Zurich last year and finally purchased the cheese to try it out, well, it was so good! Served at a party and everybody loved it! One tip: be sure you cheese is at room temp before using cutter, works best thus way!

One of the best cheeses out there
when you start shopping for "Tete de Moine", you can sometimes find it cheese stores. But it's generally much more expensive and usually old. The Package arrived in time - fast delivery.

Cheese was too old or frozen...
We received the Tete de Moine cheese very promptly after placing the order. unfortunately the cheese seemed to be or very aged or had been frozen. we have tete de Moine often and this one was not up to par. in fact we had to throw away more than half. hopefully it will be better next time.
