Montasio is a pasture-terraced mountain located to the northeast of Venice in the Friuli-Venezia region of Italy. The cheese Montasio was originally made by the monks who occupied the monastery that owned those pastures in the thirteenth century. Today, the cheese is a DOC cheese, which means its properties and production are protected by law. Montasio can now be made legally in all of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and parts of Veneto. Made in large wheels, the flavor of this cheese is nutty, and slightly fruity. Since the mountain milk from which Montasio is made is high in butterfat, the cheese has a richer flavor with hints of butterscotch.
  • Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.
  • Photo depicts whole 14 lb. form of cheese.
  • We cut and wrap this item by the 1/2 pound.

rustic, good
A rustic hard cheese. Probably not for everyone, but I like it quite a bit. Crumbles in your mouth ;-}

I love the cheese
Montasio is a great table cheese either fresh (3to 6 months) or aged (one year and up) The last order I received was well over a year old, and although I was expecting a much younger (fresher)cheese this one was supper. Please let us know when the cheese is aged as you do with the Asiago.

Best Ever
IGormet has the BEST Montasio. I recently ordered from another site when you were out of stock - the quality was SO sub-standard. It was good to get quality Montasio again. Thanks

One of my top choices!
Great just eating for lunch or snacks. Similar to Piave. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Excellent in vegetarian dishes
I use this for an Italian classic vegetarian dish of sauteed black Tuscan kale that is formed into cakes and then coated with montassio and sauteed. Unbelievable!

Quality Product
This was great in several recipes I had that called for Montasio and it was great as a crisp. Montasio wasn't available in any of my local stores so kudos to igourmet.com for having it.

Fresher the better
This cheese is best when it is 3 to 4 mths old. The older the sharper, but I enjoy it fresher for after dinner, sandwiches and with polenta

ok, but not outstanding
This cheese was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It reminded me of a cheddar. From the description, I was expecting a richer tasting cheese, not one that seemed like a cheddar. The outer edge of the cheese was very hard and it got somewhat softer as you worked your way in. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad tasting, just not what I was expecting.

absolutely amazing....
If you have ever been to Venice and miss it, or if you want to experience Venezia without going...enjoy some Montasio! One of my very favorites...
