Pronounced HOO-stah-lee-pah or you-stoy-lay-PA, its name means "bread cheese" in Finnish. Juustoleipa has been produced for more than 200 years in northern Finland and Sweden, originally from reindeer milk! Our variety comes from Wisconsin. This cheese is unusual in that it is baked during the cheesemaking process. The heat from baking caramelizes the sugars on the outside of the cheese to form a tasty crust similar to brown bread. Juustoleipa is an important cheese in its homeland-- crucial to holiday celebrations and even marriage traditions. Mothers of eligible women used to offer suitors a cup of coffee with the cheese and, if the man liked the cheese, he married the girl!

This cheese doesn't melt, but can be warmed (put in the microwave for 10 or 20 seconds until it glistens). It has a sweet flavor, especially toward its brown crust where it has been caramelized. We recommend it served as a dessert with honey or lingonberry jam. For an unusual treat, try it dipped in hot coffee!

  • Made from pasteurized cow's milk.

Love it
I work for [ ] food store. A customer brought this to me one day about 4 years ago. [ ] opened a cheese shop in the store where I worked. I introduced it to my Deli specialist at the time. She in turned sent up the ladder. NOW we have been selling it in our stores for 4 years. ( it could be longer than that). TO make a long story short , I had gastric sleeve by pass surgery, Found that this was a great source of protein. SO I have a little bit every evening for my snack, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty good, but...
This cheese tastes delicious chunked with apples or pears, or warmed and made into a sandwich on a nice, sweet roll. It *is* a tasty dessert cheese, as the description suggests, but I wouldn't say that it's worth $12 for 8 oz. If you live in an area with a large number of Latin Americans, go to the store and get some queso de freir for a few dollars, brown it yourself, then go to town. You'll save some cash and have a lovely experience.

great cheese
I had been looking for some Finn Cheese like my grandma used to make. It is real close with the exception that yours is pressed more so ours was softer. I gave some to my mom to try. I did enjoy it.

Bread Cheese???
Disappointing. Very bland flavor. Dipping in coffee does nothing for it. Microwave changes texture but with jam it adds nothing.

Wow! this is like a smooth, creamy cheese curd
I love salty cheeses and this is like a big rectangle of salty cheese curd. I agree with the instructions....microwave for 30 seconds and it becomes slightly runny and is delicious just eaten in cubes. You really don't need crackers or anything. Maybe some grapes on the side!

Unusual but Delicious
I've had this cheese before, and it's wonderful. I heat squares of it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Gooey AND chewy at the same time--a real treaat!

Juustoleipa
I love this cheese, my grandmother and grandfather had a dairy farm and my grandmother made this cheese every year. One of my favorite childhood memories this was l950's. I look for it's availability often. thank you for still making this cheese available.
