Panpepato by Masoni - 250g
Prepared with flour, honey, almonds and candied fruit, Panpepato predates panforte. Both Panpepato and panforte recipes originate from the medieval cake Focaccia alla frutta, which was made with fresh fruits. The panpepato (peppered bread) recipe originally came from the nunneries when Siena was under siege. The nuns hoped their Panpepato would help the local workmen and soldiers get a boost of health and energy. The nuns replaced the fresh fruit for candied fruit and added hot spices such as cinnamon, allspice, pepper and ginger. Almonds and other sweet spices were added as well. This recipe remains a Sienese favorite. It is said that this dessert "holds the family together." It is also lauded for its aphrodisiac spices! Throughout Italy, these cakes are eaten at Christmastime, in Siena, they are enjoyed year round.

The Masoni family have been baking exceptional sweets for over 130 years in Colle Val D’Elsa in Tuscany, Italy in the province of Siena. Their traditional pastry recipes from Panforte to Ricciarelli have been handed down for generations and today they remain known for their use of simple, high quality ingredients to produce these Italian favorites. Treasured across the Val d'Elsa, we are pleased to bring to you the inimitable flavors of Siena.
